Independent technology programme leadership

Practical leadership.
For complex
technology change.

I help organisations turn complex change into credible plans, coordinated delivery and a controlled transition into operation.

01 / How I can help

The right support.
At the point it matters.

For sponsors, technology leaders and consultancies who need experienced support to make difficult change executable.

01

Programme & Transformation Leadership

Establish control. Align the teams. Move delivery forward.

When workstreams, suppliers and business priorities need to converge, I provide the leadership to establish a credible delivery baseline and keep decisions moving.

Scope and typical outputs +
  • Objectives, scope, constraints and a shared delivery baseline.
  • Integrated planning, governance and clear accountability.
  • Coordination of suppliers, workstreams, dependencies and risks.
  • Options and recommendations when costs, deadlines or scope change.
  • Readiness, cutover coordination and operational handover.

You leave with: an integrated plan, clear ownership, practical governance and an honest view of progress, risk and decisions.

02

Discovery, Planning & Delivery Assurance

Test the assumptions. Establish a credible next step.

Before committing to scope or dates—or when delivery is struggling—I help establish what is known, what is missing and which choices need to be made.

Scope and typical outputs +
  • Focused review of plans, evidence and stakeholder perspectives.
  • Testing of scope, assumptions, estimates, dependencies and capacity.
  • Assessment of technical, business and operational readiness.
  • Clear distinction between facts, assumptions and evidence gaps.
  • Practical options where the credible requirement exceeds the original envelope.

You leave with: a concise assessment, prioritised actions with owners, and options to support an explicit decision. A roadmap or revised baseline can be included.

Migration, Separation & Cutover Leadership

Coordinate the move. Protect continuing operations.

For cloud and infrastructure migrations, data centre exits and technology separation, I connect the technical plan with the business and operational reality.

Scope and typical outputs +
  • Migration scope, dependencies and continuing business interfaces.
  • Waves sequenced around complexity, capacity and overall readiness.
  • Coordination across application, infrastructure, network and security owners.
  • Cutover preparation, communications and contingency arrangements.
  • Evidence for authorised decisions, execution coordination and handover.

You leave with: an agreed migration sequence, clear readiness criteria, coordinated cutover arrangements and an operational handover approach.

02 / Delivery in practice

Judgement shaped
by delivery.

Three examples of turning difficult constraints into a workable approach. Client situations are anonymised.

DATA CENTRE EXIT

A fixed deadline.
A different route.

A building exit combined a data centre move with relocation of physical supply chain operations. Shared resources meant the original plan could not meet the deadline.

Read the approach and outcome +

I led the assessment of options with senior stakeholders, considering dependencies, risks, cost and operational impact. I secured approval for the team’s recommended two-stage approach: temporary local rehosting while the physical operation moved, followed by the corporate data centre migration.

The building closed on time. The final technical migration completed successfully a few months later.

M&A TECHNOLOGY SEPARATION

Separate the systems.
Keep the relationship.

A business-critical supply chain application had to separate following a divestment, while the organisations continued trading. Internal connections needed to become external B2B integrations.

Read the approach and outcome +

During discovery following TSA sign-off, I established a dedicated project stream to focus on the application and its integration, infrastructure, network and security dependencies. Migration proceeded in stages, starting with non-production environments.

The application and its dependencies separated successfully, with B2B integration implemented between the organisations.

CLOUD MIGRATION

Readiness beyond
the technology.

A major retailer’s Azure migration involved applications across business units with different levels of complexity, dependencies and readiness.

Read the approach and outcome +

I worked with technical, business and operational stakeholders to agree and lock in the wave sequencing. The plan considered overall stakeholder readiness and delivery capacity alongside technical complexity.

A shared migration sequence grounded in business, operational and technical readiness.

Doug Toop.

Technology programme leader.
Business owner. Practitioner. Author.

30+years across technology,
consulting and delivery

I bring technical understanding and commercial experience to the practical work of making change happen.

My background spans programme leadership, enterprise applications, cloud and infrastructure migration and M&A technology separation, with experience across Europe and North America.

As co-founder and Managing Director of Agile Technology Solutions, I led an Oracle partner business providing products, consulting and managed services. That experience informs how I balance delivery priorities with commercial and operational responsibilities.

Through Transformation Fieldcraft, engagements are personally led and delivered by me. I work alongside your teams and suppliers, or within a consultancy delivery team, bringing in specialist input by agreement where required.

“Toolkit, not rulebook.”

I adapt proven methods to the situation, while maintaining clear ownership, evidence and delivery control.

04 / Working together

Flexible engagement.
Clear responsibility.

Start with the challenge and the outcome you need. We agree the scope, responsibilities, commitment and commercial arrangements around the engagement.

01

Interim leadership

Sustained ownership of a programme, workstream or delivery phase.

02

Fractional support

An agreed cadence of leadership or assurance, aligned to the decisions and involvement required.

03

Defined assignments

Focused discovery, planning, readiness or cutover support with agreed outputs.

Based in North West England. Remote, hybrid and on-site arrangements, location and travel agreed for each engagement.
